England Water 2017
England Water Market Opening 2017
From April 2017, non-household water customers such as businesses, charities and public sector bodies will be able to choose their water and wastewater supplier.
The introduction of competition to the English water market is intended to drive innovation in the industry whilst also reducing costs and improving service levels for customers.
Reduced water costs
Non-household water customers are likely to benefit from competitive pricing as water retailers compete for business. Additionally, there will also likely be improvements in the level of customer service customers receive and better advice as retailers look to add value to their offering.
Since market deregulation in Scotland, businesses and other non-household water customers have benefitted from huge savings in addition to significant water efficiency improvements.
Separate sites, one bill
Previously, businesses with sites in different regions in England have been billed separately for each site by the water company which covers each region.
With businesses now able to choose their water supplier, however, all sites can be supplied by the same company, all on the same bill, reducing paperwork and admin costs.
How it works
Wholesale suppliers
Water and wastewater service will continue to be supplied by regional water companies which will also continue to maintain the water network.
Water retailers
Water retailers will purchase water and wastewater services on a wholesale basis from regional water companies and will then provide these services to customers along with billing, meter reading and other customer services.
Customers
Non-household water customers such as businesses, charities and public sector bodies.
